We welcome you to this first seminar in a series of 4, and our second public event. Through the lenses of our guests Nicole l’Huillier and Karachi LaJamia (Shahana Rajani and Zahra Malkani) we’ll be looking at the intersections between vibrational modes of thinking and being in the world via sonic practice, as well as radical urban pedagogies through site-specific encounters and collaborative artistic research methods.

Attunement: Please go outside and carefully listen for a few minutes. Find a common tone and hum in response. As you do, please reflect on the air that carries these vibrations and that activates your responses.
From Karachi LaJamia
Take a look at the site of your university. What did the land look like before it became the site for this institution? To whom did it belong then and to whom does it belong now? What kinds of relationships are made possible, what kinds of relationships are thwarted here? What forms and practices of knowledge are legitimised and delegitimised here?

A Membranal Practice
This presentation contains a series of works, reflections, and references that constitute the notion of La Membrana (The Membrane) –an organizational apparatus and model structure for tuning into our vibrational reality– as a resonant territory for thinking and practicing. Based on the configuration and characteristics of a vibrational membrane, La Membrana is a stimulating and productive concept that fosters vibrational modes of thinking and being in the world. It is a structure that can function as a threshold activated by vibrations and that provides a fertile territory for nonlinear narratives, vibrational relationships, and oscillatory experiences. Through this presentation, we will explore these ideas and how they have formed the foundation for articulating my artistic practice and research.

Ecstatic Ecopedagogies
An introduction to Karachi LaJamia’s experiences and experiments with ecopedagogy. Karachi LaJamia was founded in 2015 by artists Shahana Rajani and Zahra Malkani as a nomadic space moving outside the institution to explore new radical pedagogies and art practices. Since 2015 we have facilitated a series of site-specific courses and collaborative research projects to explore the intersections of militarism, climate crisis, indigenous dispossession, and knowledge production in Karachi. Our courses are developed in close collaboration with local organisations and activists to build solidarity with ongoing struggles around land, water and development in the city.
